Church-at-home here during Corona Virus epidemic – no services in Neuchâtel, but special e-services each Sunday from All Saints’, our sister church in Vevey

Letter from our Chaplain, Rev. Clive Atkinson , All Saints’ Church, Vevey
27th March, 2020

Dear All Saints Family,

Yvonne and I send you our love and assure you of our prayers as we continue in this season where our church building is closed but our church is very much alive.

Thanks for reading to the end of this email in which you’ll find information about ways to connect with the wider church family, resources for this Sunday for all ages, and a host of other things.

A Thought from History
Our Church building is closed but our Church is alive and learning what it means both be church in our homes and yet discovering what it means to also be “sent out” to love our neighbour.

The Church has been around for quite a while. And so, it won’t come as a surprise to any of us, that Covid-19 is not the first time the church community has experienced sickness which has impacted whole communities and nations.

In the two centuries that followed Christ, there were two huge empire wide pandemics. There was the Galen pandemic named after the medical doctor, Galen; this was followed by the Cyprian pandemic, named after the Bishop of Carthage.  He led the church through this pandemic which lasted for 10 years.

We still have many of the letters and sermons he wrote during this period, as he sought to hold his communities together.  Among the many things he said, Cyprian encouraged his communities during this period to be busy in helping their neighbours.

This very same sentiment was expressed by Martin Luther, the great Reformer, who lived through at least one pandemic. He wrote to his congregation ….

“I shall ask God mercifully to protect us. Then I shall fumigate, help purify the air, administer medicine and take it. I shall avoid places and persons where my presence is not needed in order not to become contaminated and thus perchance inflict and pollute others and so cause their death as a result of my negligence. If God should wish to take me, he will surely find me and I have done what he has expected of me and so I am not responsible for either my own death or the death of others. If my neighbour needs me however I shall not avoid place or person but will go freely as stated above. See this is such a God-fearing faith because it is neither brash nor foolhardy and does not tempt God.”

Martin Luther knew he wasn’t immune from this disease. He understood that as Christian he had no promise of physical protection. And so, he took precautions both to protect himself and his neighbour, at the same time wishing to serve others as best he could.

We now find ourselves cheered on by such a cloud of witnesses as we seek to do the same in our day.

Caring for One Another
Thank you once again to the many of you who signed up to serve our church community in practical ways. Gilla Stead, our Pastoral Cluster Leader has worked hard to ensure that the most vulnerable in our community are connected with someone who will support them throughout this time.

Some of us who offered help, have yet to be contacted. Our aim is to ask for your help as needs arise.

Although our immediate concern is to provide practical support with the most vulnerable, especially running errands and staying in contact via the phone, a number of us have offered other forms of help. These include, tutoring, pet care, online dance coaching, and general maintenance tasks. If you would like more information about these resources, please contact me directly.

Do You Need Help?
The Church family is ready to help if you find yourself quarantined or in need of any kind. You are welcome to contact either Gilla Stead (admin@allsaints.ch) or myself (cliveatkinson@bluewin.ch | 0787101860) and we will coordinate the support you need.

Staying Connected

It’s Good To Talk
Let’s not underestimate the encouragement a phone call can bring. Why not set yourself the challenge of calling one person in the church family each day?

This Sunday 29th March | 5th Sunday in Lent
Tomorrow (Saturday) you will receive an email from us with resources for Sunday morning worship. These resources will include two Orders of Service, one reflecting the style of our 09h00 Service and the other the style of our 10h30 Service.  Each will contain links to a short talk by me as well as links to hymns and songs found on Youtube.

In the email, you will also find links to material for Climbers and Explorers aged children. Calen will be in contact with our Core Jr and Sr members and will meet them online using a platform called “Zoom Cloud Meetings”. You can find this online or download the app onto your phone or ipad.

A question has arisen regarding giving, particularly for those of us who give primarily during the Offering at our Sunday services.  With details available on the church website, you can make a donation at any time.
